Learn more about the Golden Retriever.
Hi there! My name is Clark, and I was rescued from an Indiana puppy mill along with my brother Lewis. We are both beautiful, purebred Golden Retriever pups, about 12 weeks old. I'm very friendly, and I love to meet new people. Most of the time you'll find me walking around with a toy in my mouth! My favorite toys are definitely nylabones. I'm a calm and affectionate puppy, I have an adorable face and a soft and fluffy coat, I'm smart, and I love everybody - just a wonderful puppy all around! Update 9/25/12: At my routine vet checkup, it was found that I have a moderate heart murmur (grade 3/6), so I'm going to take a trip the cardiologist for an echocardiogram. My foster mom tells me that it won't be scary, but it is a bit expensive, so donations to help cover the cost would be so very much appreciated!! Thanks friends! Update 10/2/12: Today Clark had his complete cardio work up at Veterinary Specialty of Delaware. It was found that he has a subaortic stenosis (SAS), which is an abnormally narrow passage way leading from the heart to the aorta. It is very common in Golden Retrievers and other large breed dogs. Clark's SAS is rated at the top end of "Moderate", and although it is possible that it could get better, in most instances it doesn't. SAS is not surgically correctible, but medication can keep it under control. Clark will need a tiny inexpensive pill, called a "beta blocker" two times per day for the rest of his life (roughly $15/month). Beta blockers reduce heart rate, help control abnormal heart rhythym and reduce blood pressure. They are proven in their ability to extend the lives of dogs with SAS. Clark loves "medicine time" and will very happily take his pill with a little bit of peanut butter. Clark will need to follow up with the cardiologist at 6 months old and again at 1 year old - at that time they will be able to more accurately determine the long term prognosis. Many dogs with SAS live to their normal life expectancy, and we hope the same for Clark. In terms of Clark's personality - his condition basically makes him the most well behaved Golden Retriever puppy you've ever met! He is very calm and would be a great choice for someone who is a couch potato. He'll go for short walks and walks nicely on the leash, but he is a dog that will require minimal exercise. He loves to just sit with you or follow you around the house or find a comfy place to chew on his nylabones. He's a very happy puppy - his tail is always wagging! He is SO smart and easily trainable. He will look right at you and try to figure out what you are asking him to do. He mastered "Sit" in about 2 minutes! He loves treats, so that really helps the training process too. Clark would make a fabulous therapy dog. He's quiet, super affectionate and gets along perfectly with everyone. He is wonderful and gentle with other dogs, cats and kittens too. It's virtually impossible not to fall in love with this sweet puppy. Clark will make a great addition to one very lucky family.
